In 2006, the nickel returned to using Felix Schlag's Monticello design on a newly cast reverse, while the obverse featured a new forward-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on the 1800 Rembrandt Peale portrait. It is the first U.S. circulating coin that features the image of a President facing forward. The new obverse was designed by Jamie Franki.

- 1939 Doubled Monticello. All Jefferson Nickels struck between 1938 and 2003 have a depiction of Jefferson’s home, Monticello, on the reverse of the coin.
- 1939-D Jefferson Nickel. With only 3,514,000 coins, this is the second lowest mintage Jefferson Nickel struck for circulation. It is relatively valuable in all grades from Very Fine ($10.00) through Choice Uncirculated ($75.00).
- 1942-D Over Horizontal D. When the “D” Mintmark was added to the die, it was placed horizontally instead of vertically, resulting in this strange error.
- 1943-P 3/2 Jefferson Nickel. The 1943 3 Over 2 Silver War Nickel is the first of 3 scarce variety War Nickels. Traces of the “2” underneath the “3” as seen but this coin is particularly scarce in all grades.

Mar 29, 2022 · The special war-time nickel coinage was marked by the mints with large mintmarks above Monticello. This oddity led to the arrest of a counterfeiter, Francis Henning, in 1955; the ‘private minter’ made 1944 nickels, among other dates, but did not realize that a special mintmark was needed.
Ron Guth: Following the completion of the "Westward Journey" Nickel series in 2005, the Mint decided to return to a more familiar theme. In particular, the "Monticello" design on the reverses of 1938-2003 Nickels was restored in 2006, hence the "Return to Monticello" name for this new type.
