Jan 8, 2021 · Reverse (tails): The design returns to the familiar image of Jefferson's home, Monticello, used on the nickel from 1938 to 2003. The image has been restored using Felix Schlag's original work to bring out greater detail and relief to the dome, balconies, door, and windows.
The reverse of the coin continued to show the vintage Monticello design. This is a well designed copper coin because it mixes the vintage design of the Jefferson Nickel, with the new and reimagined illustration of Thomas Jefferson.
- 1964 SMS: $8,750 in MS65. Available only in 1964 Special Mint Sets, it is believed that less than 40 examples of this sharply struck matte proof exist.
- 1942-D (D Over Horizontal D): $4,620 in MS65. The strange horizontal alignment of the "D" (above) is difficult to miss once you see it! The fact that mintmarks were still hand-punched onto working dies for much of the 20th century made this type of error possible.

In particular, the "Monticello" design on the reverses of 1938-2003 Nickels was restored in 2006, hence the "Return to Monticello" name for this new type. Thomas Jefferson still graces the obverse, but in this pose he faces almost completely forward and his bust is shifted to the left side of the coin.
