Biography. Gedun Drupa, 1st Dalai Lama. Gedun Drupa was born in a cow-shed in Gyurmey Rupa near Sakya in the Tsang region of central Tibet, the son of Gonpo Dorjee and Jomo Namkha Kyi, nomadic tribespeople. [3] He was raised as a shepherd until the age of seven.
The 1st Dalai Lama soon became Abbot of the greatest one, Drepung, and developed a large popular power base in Ü. He later extended this to cover Tsang, where he constructed a fourth great monastery, Tashi Lhunpo, at Shigatse.
The First Dalai Lama, Gedun Drupa was a great person of immense scholarship, famous for combining study and practice, and wrote more than eight voluminous books on his insight into the Buddha's teachings and philosophy.

The First Dalai Lama, Gendun Drub (dGe-’dun grub) was born as Pema Dorje (Padma rdo-rje) in 1391 to a nomadic family that wandered the areas around Sakya (Sa-skya), in the Tsang (gTsang) district of Tibet.
Jul 27, 2022 · The first Dalai Lama died in 1474 at the age of 84 during his meditation time at Tashihunpo, the monastery he founded, states the official Dalai Lama website. But his work was only beginning. The title of Dalai Lama came to him only after two others took over the role.
He was posthumously identified as the First Dalai Lama, a previous incarnation of the third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, who first held the title. Gendun Drub was identified as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion believed to be embodied in the Dalai Lama incarnation line.
