May 16, 2018 · Bruiser & Marigold are iconic characters proudly donning the Green and Gold on the sidelines and competitively. The tradition began when Baylor chose the Bear instead of the ever-popular bookworm to represent the school as its official mascot in 1914.
The mascots of Baylor University are two live black bears named Judge Indy and Judge Belle. American black bears roamed the majority of Texas in considerable abundance during Baylor's founding in 1845, and bears could still be found throughout many areas of the state until the 1940s.

May 1, 2014 · While the design and coloring of the mascot suit has changed, the popular bear that appears at football games and other Baylor functions has continued to be known as Bruiser. In 2005, Bruiser was one of 12 costumed mascots named to the All-America Mascot Team sponsored by Capital One.
