The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television.
He played Bob Gringle in the TV Western Gunsmoke in the 1958 episode "Lynching Man" (S4:E10). During the 1960s, Gray established himself as a successful character actor and made many appearances on British television.
To add to the weirdness of this story, throughout the episode, Festus carries a level he won in a card game from a man named Lon (Charles H. Gray). Festus is fascinated with this tool he can use to determine if a surface is level, and, as a result, he goes around checking all sorts of surfaces only to find that most are not level.
