The entrance, barely visible among the high desert plants that have taken root at the base of Mt Shasta, is a gaping foreboding hole that leads deep into the ground.
But before that, Shastina, along with the then forming Black Butte dacite plug dome (a volcano with steep sides formed from pasty lava "squeezed" out of a central vent) complex to the west, created numerous pyroclastic flows that covered 43 square miles (110 square kilometers), including large parts of what is now Mount Shasta and Weed, California.
