Fr. Popiełuszko was murdered by three members of the Służba Bezpieczeństwa — the Polish Security Service — on October 19 th, 1984, and his body dumped into the Vistula River. The murder caused widespread outrage across the country as his murderers were convicted and subsequently jailed.

Although the Communists had been trying to kill Popieuszko in ways that would seem like an accident, they captured him 34 years ago today, on Oct. 19, 1984. They beat him to death and threw his body into a river. He was 37 years old.
