Sir Anthony James Dowell CBE (born 16 February 1943) is a retired British ballet dancer and a former artistic director of the Royal Ballet. He is widely recognized as one of the great danseurs nobles of the twentieth century.
Biography. English dancer, director and designer Anthony Dowell was Director of The Royal Ballet 1986–2001. As a dancer he was one of the great danseurs nobles of the 20th century. In his time with the Company he created many roles for leading choreographers, and forged an acclaimed dance partnership with Antoinette Sibley.

British dancer and director. He studied with June Hampshire and from 1953 at Sadler's Wells Ballet School, becoming the Royal Ballet School. In 1960 he joined Covent Garden Opera Ballet and in 1961 the Royal Ballet where he was promoted principal in 1966.
