Cambridge, city, seat (1686) of Dorchester county, eastern Maryland, U.S., on the Choptank River’s south bank near Chesapeake Bay ’s eastern shore. Bisected by Cambridge Creek (a natural harbour), it was founded in 1684 as a plantation port and named in 1686 for the English university town.
