David Jay Grisman (born March 23, 1945) is an American mandolinist. His music combines bluegrass, folk, and jazz in a genre he calls "Dawg music". He founded the record label Acoustic Disc, which issues his recordings and those of other acoustic musicians. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2023.
For nearly 40 years, mandolinist/composer David Grisman has been busy creating “dawg” music, a blend of many stylistic influences (including swing, bluegrass, latin, jazz and gypsy) so unique he gave it its own name.
Straight-ahead bluegrass featuring Del McCoury on guitar and vocals, Jerry McCoury on bass, Bill Keith on banjo, and others, with Grisman’s instrumental prowess on display from the opening “Fanny Hill” through the blistering closing duet with mandolinist Frank Wakefield.
With influences ranging from bluegrass to jazz, New Jersey native and California-based David Grisman is one of the most distinctive and influential mandolin players in history.
