Death Wish is a quasifascist advertisement for urban vigilantes, done up in a slick and exciting action movie; we like it even while we’re turned off by the message. It gives us Charles Bronson in a role that starts out by being somewhat out of character.
Paul Kersey, a successful Manhattan architect, seems to have it all: a supportive wife, a lovely daughter, and a peaceful life, but happiness is an illusion. When a sadistic gang of street thugs robs Paul of everything he holds dear, he soon realizes he's on his own.
