Eddy County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2020 census, the population was 62,314. Its county seat and largest city is Carlsbad. The county was created in 1891 and later organized in 1892. It is north of the Texas state line. Eddy County comprises the Carlsbad-Artesia, NM Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Eddy County is located in Southeastern New Mexico. Around 25,000 BC, the people living in the area of Eddy County were relatives of “Sandia Man.” Nomadic hunters wondered the area, hunting buffalo and other game, over the next several thousand years.

Mescalero and Lipan Apache Indians were dominant until the late 19th century. Between 1870 and 1881 the area east of the Pecos pastured some of the world’s largest cattle holdings on the property of rancher John Chisum. The county was established in 1889.
