After marrying his college sweetheart, Helen Burger, in 1928, Miller continued his freelance work in New York, eventually becoming the music director for the Dorsey Brothers.
In 1928, when the band arrived in New York City, he sent for and married his college sweetheart, Helen Burger. He was a member of Red Nichols ' orchestra (Red Nichols and his Five Pennies) [1] in 1930, and because of Nichols, he played in the pit bands of two Broadway shows, Strike Up the Band and Girl Crazy .

On December 15, 1944 he flew across the English Channel in a single engine UC-64 Norseman aircraft. The plane was lost over the channel and no trace has ever been found. He left behind his wife, the former Helen Burger from Boulder, CO and two children they had adopted in 1943 and 1944.
