History. Major John Redd, Continental Army, pioneer settler of Henry County. The county was established in 1777 when it was carved from Pittsylvania County. The new county was initially named Patrick Henry County in honor of Patrick Henry, who was then serving as the first Governor of Virginia, and some of whose relatives had settled in the area.

Jan 4, 2024 · Originally, Henry included what became Franklin County in 1787 and Patrick County, which split off in 1791. It wasn’t as simple as drawing lines on a map. In fact, a county’s creation was a heated topic of discussion in the legislature. As the governor of Virginia in 1776, Patrick Henry supported creating the county that included part of his name.

Henry County was created on 31 Dec. 1776 from the western border lands of Pittsylvania County. Its name honored Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia. Nine years later, in 1785, the northern portion of the new county was cut off to form a part of Franklin County.
