    Hoke County is located in North Carolina's Coastal Plain region in an area originally inhabited by Saura (Cheraw) and Lumbee Indians. The county was formed from Cumberland and Robeson Counties in 1911-the third attempt (after failures in 1907 and 1909) to create a new jurisdiction for disaffected residents of the two counties.
