Joshua Stevens born in 1814 worked for many of the New England gun manufactures. In 1864 he. received a patent for his tip up pistol. This patent stated Stevens in the gun business in his own right.

Not surprisingly, to my knowledge no one has undertaken to write the definitive history of the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts – or if they have, they are in an asylum somewhere. However, good information is available from several sources.
In 1902, J. Stevens A & T Co. claimed to be the world’s largest producer of sporting arms. In 1907, Stevens had agents on four continents: North America, South America, Europe, and Australia.
