Fenimore Art Museum is a museum of American art. It is named for the property on which it stands, land once owned by the novelist James Fenimore Cooper. The Museum occupies a 1933 mansion built by Edward Severin Clark, an heir to the Singer Manufacturing Company fortune.

James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 – September 14, 1851) was an American writer of the first half of the 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune.
Nov 3, 2017 · While William Cooper’s fortitude introduced the splendor of the region, the prose of his descendants captures the harmony with the landscape enjoyed by both visitors and residents today. William’s sixth and best-known son, James Fenimore Cooper, is considered to be America’s first novelist.
Most significant is the inclusion of James Fenimore Cooper, and Cooper’s wife and daughter, both named Susan. In contrast to Cooper’s family is both Morse himself, recently widowed, and Horatio Greenough, who was a bachelor. The painting provides insight into Cooper as traveler and patron of the arts.
