John S. McCain, Jr. John McCain was born on January 17, 1911, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1931, and served aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma (BB-37) in the Pacific for his first assignment.
