Oct 5, 2016 · Masquerade is the quintessential armchair treasure hunt book: beautiful to look at and filled with many small, easy puzzles as well as one large one that is nigh impossible to solve. This post goes through some of the little puzzles in the book (as much as can be covered in a single blog post).
Masquerade is a picture book, written and illustrated by Kit Williams and published in August 1979, that sparked a treasure hunt by including concealed clues to the location of a jewelled golden hare that had been created and hidden somewhere in Britain by Williams.

- The hunt begins. Image source, Kit Williams. Masquerade's release in August 1979 was a publishing phenomenon. Masquerade follows the journey of Jack Hare, who loses a jewel he has been entrusted to deliver from the moon to the sun.
- The solution. Image source, Kelvin Horton. The shadow of Katherine's Cross in Ampthill Great Park pointed the way to the treasure. Among the golden hares and red herrings, only one theory led to the correct solution - and the golden prize.
- Discovery. Image source, Kit Williams. Drawing lines between the paws and eyes in this painting leads to letters spelling "amulet" By early 1982, Barker and Rousseau had arrived at what Gascoigne later called "the most perfect solution" to the puzzle.

The official solution is available in the paperback edition of Masquerade, but I feel an even better reference work is Bamber Gascoigne’s Quest for the Golden Hare, which includes Barker & Rousseau’s detailed contest entry in full–which has become known as “the perfect solution.”.
