Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. 1689 –. 1762. Read poems by this poet. Born on May 15, 1689 to Evelyn and Mary Pierrepont, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu is remembered primarily as a letter writer. Her father was a wealthy Whig who later became the Marquess of Dorchester, and Lady Mary, like other aristocratic women of her time, was educated at home.
The wonderfully cynical and world-weary ‘A Receipt to Cure the Vapours’ plays men at their own faithless game, while at the same time making fun of women who put on false shows of mourning. This is Lady Mary at her most glittering and dangerous, a feminist before the world knew what feminism was.
Although Lady Mary Wortley Montagu is now best known for her Embassy Letters, she wrote poetry and essays as well. A number of Lady Mary’s poems and essays were printed in her lifetime, either without or with her permission, in newspapers, in miscellanies, and independently.
