Mary Virginia Martin (December 1, 1913 – November 3, 1990) was an American actress and singer. A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, she originated many leading roles on stage over her career, including Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949), the title character in Peter Pan (1954), and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959).
Actress: Peter Pan. Originally a dance instructor, she came to Broadway during the Depression to begin her career as a professional actress. A daughter of Texas, she originally began work as a dance instructor until a local evangelical-adherent burned down her studio citing her work as being too sinful for human nature.

Martin also became a popular television star, especially for her much admired Peter Pan, which was first broadcast in 1955 and won her an Emmy Award. She also recorded albums of Broadway show tunes and other music. Her autobiography, My Heart Belongs, was published in 1976. Her son, Larry Hagman, became a successful television actor.
