The current Amtrak station in Mendota is a brick structure. Mendota rail travelers originally used the Passenger House, a combination depot and hotel, which was built in 1853, as a place to change trains going to and from Chicago and St. Louis.
The building is a restored part of the original railroad station built in late 1880's which was torn down in the early 1940's. The museum houses many railroad artifacts, HO model railroad depicting Mendota in the late 1930'/ early 1940's, extensive railroad history library, and many displays.
