There is a Forest Service campground next to the river in the Canadian River Canyon. It is free and has seven sites. This is a good option, but there is dispersed camping anywhere in the canyon and there are some better sites a little further down the road from the campground.

UP IN NORTHEASTERN New Mexico, where the grasslands and the sky seem to have the run of the place, there’s a house at the end of First Street in Springer that stands apart from everything else.
Directions: From Las Vegas, New Mexico, go north on I-25 to Wagon Mound (50 miles), east on New Mexico Highway 120 to Roy (33 miles), then north on New Mexico Highway 39 for 10 miles. Look for the road sign to Mills Canyon or the Mills Canyon Road street sign. Proceed west on this gravel road for 10 miles to the rim of Mills Canyon.
Mills Canyon Campground is a beautiful, remote campground situated within the Canadian River Canyon at an elevation of 5,160 feet. There are 12 camping units available. At a Glance.
