Norton Winfred Simon (February 5, 1907 – June 2, 1993) was an American industrialist and philanthropist. He was at one time one of the wealthiest men in America. At the time of his death, he had amassed a net worth of nearly US$10 billion. Simon was born to a Jewish family in Portland, Oregon. His father operated a wholesale goods store there.

Over a 30-year period, the industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an impressive group of European masterworks from the Renaissance to the 20th century, and a stellar collection of South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years.
The Norton Simon Museum’s collection of European paintings and sculpture is among the most distinguished in North America. It spans the Renaissance to the 20th century and includes the finest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist pictures on the West Coast.

Norton Simon’s activity as a collector spanned more than 30 years and encompassed the purchase of more than 8,000 works of art during his lifetime. He began this pursuit in the mid 1950s with purchases of works by 19 th -century painters such as Daumier, Degas, Renoir and Gauguin.
The Norton Simon Museum is home to a distinguished collection of American art from the 20th century. Early in his collecting, Norton Simon purchased a collage by Helen Frankenthaler, and would continue to collect works by Ronald Davis, Ed Ruscha, Josef Albers and Alexander Calder.
