Pope Clement XIV (Latin: Clemens XIV; Italian: Clemente XIV; 31 October 1705 – 22 September 1774), born Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 19 May 1769 to his death in September 1774.
Clement XIV (born Oct. 31, 1705, near Rimini, Papal States —died Sept. 22, 1774, Rome) was the pope from 1769 to 1774. Educated by the Jesuits at Rimini, he joined the Conventual Franciscans at Mondaino, taking the religious name of Lorenzo.
He took the name of Clement XIV. The new pope’s first Encyclical clearly defined his policy: to keep the peace with Catholic princes in order to secure their support in the war against irreligion. His predecessor had left him a legacy of broils with nearly every Catholic power in Europe.
Pope Clement XIV was the 14th pope to take the name of Clement and the 249th man to lead the Catholic Church and its Papal States.
