Steve Gerber got his start in fanzines, worked in advertising, and then found his way to comics in 1972 when he was hired by Roy Thomas for a staff job at Marvel. Gerber wasn’t suited for staff work, but by the time Marvel realized that, they’d discovered the value of his quirky imagination as a writer.

About Steve Gerber and This Blog. Photo by Mark Evanier. Stephen Ross Gerber was born in St. Louis on September 20, 1947. A longtime fan of comic books, he was involved in the ditto/mimeo days of fanzine publishing in the sixties, publishing one called Headline at age 14.
Read the piece on your blog, so I thought I’d add a comment in honor of Steve. I think of him as the godfather of alt-comics, the first to successfully merge underground commix’s existentialist, anti-establishment, and literary sensibilities into mainstream IP.
