The Groundlings is an American improvisational and sketch comedy troupe and school based in Los Angeles, California. The troupe was formed by Gary Austin in 1974 and uses an improv format influenced by Viola Spolin, whose improv techniques were taught by Del Close and other members of the Second City, located in Chicago and later St. Louis.
Learn the difference between character and premise sketches, identifying beats, writing for your medium, and how to find material. Get experience and build confidence in your writing ability. For each class, students will write and submit sketches, and we will find the gold in whatever you create. No prerequisite.
Alumni. These people were Groundlings. They built this place, literally and figuratively. Many of them still actively teach and perform at the theatre. It's a pretty impressive group of funny people, and we're proud to say they got their start on the Groundlings stage. Alumni are listed in the decade during which they retired from the Main Company.
