"The Long Night" is the third episode of the eighth season of HBO's medieval fantasy television series Game of Thrones, and the 70th episode overall. It was written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Miguel Sapochnik.
Eight thousand years before the War of the Five Kings, a winter known as the Long Night descended upon the world, which lasted an entire generation. Thousands starved as the crops and fields lay buried under dozens of feet of snow.
The episode title refers to the Long Night, a winter that descended upon the world 8,000 years before Aegon's Conquest, and lasted an entire generation. It may also refer to refers to the long Battle of Winterfell, which lasted a night long. The soundtrack playing over the credits is a rendition of the Night King's theme.
