There are a number of variables that may, or may not, affect the hang time of a projectile. These variables include the launch angle (denoted as θ) the initial velocity of the projectile, and the mass of the projectile.

The hang time of a basketball player who jumps a vertical distance of 2 feet (0.6 m) is 2/3 seconds.

In fact, the maximum hang time a normal human being can manage is 1 second – no more than that. Michael Jordan’s longest hang time record – the time when he remained airborne the longest – is 0.92 seconds.

On average, you fall 200 feet per second during a skydive. From 10,000 feet, this means you’ll be in freefall for approximately 30 seconds. From 14,000 feet, you’ll fall for 60 seconds. From 18,000 feet, it’s about 90 seconds.

Punters can reach around 5.5 seconds in hang time and the end of season, and leaders are generally around 4.8 seconds.

How do you find initial velocity? Work out which of the displacement (S), final velocity (V), acceleration (A) and time (T) you have to solve for initial velocity (U). If you have V, A and T, use U = V – AT. If you have S, V and T, use U = 2(S/T) – V.

The height doesn’t double because in the formula the time is squared, so height increases by a factor of 2.

The “hang time” of a projectile is also determined by the initial value of the vertical velocity component. The smaller the initial value of vy, the shorter the hang time.

A launch at 45 degrees would allow the ball to remain in the air for a longer time, but it would then be launched at a lower horizontal speed at the start and it would slow down more because of the longer flight time. An additional aerodynamic force arises if the ball is spinning.

The sine function reaches its largest output value, 1, with an input angle of 90 degrees, so we can see that for the longest-range punts 2θ = 90 degrees and, therefore, θ = 45 degrees. A projectile, in other words, travels the farthest when it is launched at an angle of 45 degrees.
