Although the Supremacy Clause states that the Constitution, federal laws, and treaties are the “supreme law of the land,” according to the Supreme Court, it is clear that the Constitution created a federal government of limited powers.
Each state has a governor, a legislature, and a judiciary. Each state also has its own constitution. Mirroring the U.S. Congress, all state legislatures are bicameral except Nebraska’s, which is unicameral.
A state government is the government that controls a subdivision of a country in a federal form of government, which shares political power with the federal or national government. A state government may have some level of political autonomy, or be subject to the direct control of the federal government.
