The second-eldest son of a carpenter would go on to influence the development of the car. This applies particularly to the period when he was Gottlieb Daimler’s associate until he passed away in 1900.
Wilhelm Maybach was born in Heilbronn on February 9, 1846, where he grew up with his five siblings. He became an orphan at the age of ten. He went to school at the Bruderhaus Reutlingen, a Christian institution founded to give homes and work to the socially disadvantaged, whose founder and head master recognized Maybach’s technical talent at a very early stage and gave him encouragement.
The founding of Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau-GmbH Bissingen followed on 23 March 1909. Wilhelm Maybach’s son Karl, who also designed the new Zeppelin engine, took over the technical management. In 1912 the firm, renamed Luftfahrzeug-Motoren-GmbH, relocated to Friedrichshafen. Father and son each held a 20-percent share in the company.
