Aug 31, 2023 · Summary. There are three basic shapes of bacteria: coccus, bacillus, and spiral. Based on planes of division, the coccus shape can appear in several distinct arrangements: diplococcus, streptococcus, tetrad, sarcina, and staphylococcus. The bacillus shape can appear as a single bacillus, a streptobacillus, or a coccobacillus.
Jan 1, 2008 · E. coli is Gram-negative and its envelope has three layers: cytoplasmic membrane, peptidoglycan, and outer membrane. The peptidoglycan is rigid determining the rod shape. To a good approximation, the E. coli cell has hemispherical caps and a cylindrical section in between.

Feb 13, 2021 · Coliforms have historically been an important group of bacteria in food microbiology, for their practical role in serving as indicator organisms for possible faecal contamination and even E. coli contamination.
