   • For the core, that marked the third straight month of 0.4% readings, the hottest such string since early last year. On a year-on-year basis, headline CPI accelerated to 3.5%, while the core held at 3.8%, with both readings exceeding economists’ forecasts.

   Will May CPI rise in 2024?

   • But the data could help inform potential rate cuts later in 2024. Nowcasts see May CPI inflation at a relatively low 0.08% monthly rate. However, that projection is likely in part due to falling oil prices for most of May. Once the impact of food and energy is removed, the nowcast projects a less encouraging 0.3% increase in core CPI.
