Definitely among the late Ringo Lam's best films, “City on Fire” is one of the most iconic Hong Kong films of all time, although its international fame came after Tarantino used several elements (including the Mexican standoff) in “Reservoir Dogs”.
A brutal film, one that undercuts the pageantry of contemporary Hong Kong Heroic Bloodshed films for a nightmarish view of violence that, far from embracing nihilism, display potent humanity in its rejection of the hyper-stylized cool of crime.
