Ross's mother, Katherine Mullen (1909–1993), was originally from Oklahoma and had lived in Indiana and Oregon before moving to San Francisco. She married Ross's father there in 1937. The family later settled in Walnut Creek. Ross was a keen horse rider in her youth and was friends with rodeo rider Casey Tibbs.
