Shortly thereafter, Cochran fell ill, and died two days later on June 15, 1965, at the age of 48, of what was later determined to be an acute lung infection. The women who were accompanying him did not know how to sail the boat, and were trapped with the decomposing body for ten days, before being rescued out at sea.
An autopsy was. performed but pathologists said it would be several days before the cause of Cochran’s death could be determined. Authorities said the actor, who specialized in ”B” movie tough guy roles, apparently had been dead since June 13.
He died of an acute lung infection and was dead for nearly a week when his drifting schooner and the girls (one of whom was several years under-age) were rescued from the ocean near Guatemala on June 21st. A fitting if not troubling end for the one-time he-man Hollywood star.

But it’s none-theless one of Cochran’s most memorable death scenes. After overturn-ing his getaway car in a high-speed chase with the law, he climbs out of the wreckage and staggers onto a set of train tracks. He is dropped to his knees after getting hit by a spray of machine gun bullets but somehow doesn’t die.
