Leopold V (1157 – 31 December 1194), known as the Virtuous (German: der Tugendhafte) was a member of the House of Babenberg who reigned as Duke of Austria from 1177 and Duke of Styria within the Holy Roman Empire from 1192 until his death.

Leopold was the son of Henry II Jasomirgott and his Byzantine wife Theodora Comnena.
Leopold II (1050 – 12 October 1095), known as Leopold the Fair (German: Luitpold der Schöne), a member of the House of Babenberg, was Margrave of Austria from 1075 until his death. A supporter of the Gregorian Reforms, he was one of the main opponents of the German king Henry IV during the Investiture Controversy.

Leopold III (German: Luitpold, 1073 – 15 November 1136), known as Leopold the Good, was the Margrave of Austria from 1095 to his death in 1136. He was a member of the House of Babenberg . He was canonized on 6 January 1485 and became the patron saint of Austria , Lower Austria , Upper Austria and Vienna .

According to legend this is the origin of the red-white-red of the Babenberg coat of arms - and ultimately of the Austrian national flag. Latest research shows however, that the coat of arms can be traced back to the heraldic banner of the Eppensteins, a noble medieval family.
A few years later a treaty of inheritance (Georgenberg; 1186) was concluded between the dukes Leopold V of Austria (reigned 1177–94), a son of Henry II Jasomirgott, and Otakar IV of Steiermark, the ailing last Otakar ruler. When Otakar died in 1192, Leopold succeeded him, and thus the Babenbergs came into the inheritance.
