Nov 4, 2020 · The vertical datum used by surveyors across the country is mean sea level, obtained through a tide gauge. Of course, measuring the sea is a lot trickier than measuring the floor in your house to check a person’s height.
The North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) is the vertical datum for orthometric heights established for vertical control surveying in the United States of America based upon the General Adjustment of the North American Datum of 1988.
To avoid ambiguity, use "altitude" in geologic reports to indicate height above sea level and use "elevation" to mean uplift. However, because the term elevation is widely used by engineers and topographers to mean altitude, USGS reports directed to such readers may follow that usage.
