This combination brooch/pendant features a neo-classical opal cameo of Mercury, carved in boulder opal by Wilhelm Schmidt (1845-1938). The hand fabricated frame is 12ct gold and measures 25 x 23mm, the cameo is about 14 x 12mm.

Carved three dimensionally from a single piece of opal matrix, depicting the head of an idealised romatic hero facing right, his feathered helmet in precious opal on the front, his bearded profile and the reverse in carved opal matrix, mounted in yellow gold, length 3.8cm.

Wilhelm Schmidt (1845-1938) was a talented stone engraver, particularly noted for his work in carved opal. In the late 1860s, Schmidt moved to London, where he established a gem-carving business in Hatton Garden with his brother Louis, supplying intaglios and cameos for many important jewellers including John Brogden, Guiliano and Child & Child ...
The present cameo of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, craft and war, is closely comparable to another citrine cameo by Schmidt, now in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, collection number BM.1985,MI6564.
