- It was based on a “true story.” According to writer/director Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes was heavily inspired by the legend of Sawney Bean, believed to be the head of a wild Scottish clan that murdered and cannibalized numerous people during the 16th century.
- The film was also inspired by necessity. After Craven released The Last House on the Left in 1972, he tried his hand at making films outside of the horror genre, but according to the late director, “Nobody wanted to know about it.”
- Craven was even influenced by The Grapes of Wrath. For The Hills Have Eyes, Craven reportedly wanted to do “something more sophisticated” than The Last House on the Left, and also claimed, “I didn’t want to feel uncomfortable again about making a statement about human depravity.”
