It's a gritty, funny and well-observed comedy-drama that perfectly captures the urban disillusionment of lower middle-class lives. An absolute must-see.
Ivan Passer's film is meant to be a comedy, but the working-class stiffs that populate it are racist, short-tempered and ignorant. So one finds it hard to care. The things we're supposed to find funny: poverty, theft, rape, simply don't work as gags.
As a comedy "Law and Disorder" is pretty heavy-handed and from my (British, 2022) perspective it didn't raise many laughs at all (my partner wanted to switch off after 20 mins, I watched the rest by myself out of sheer doggedness).
