Mar 22, 2022 · The One Ring 2 nd edition is a well-written RPG that accurately captures the feel of Tolkien’s works. The art is gorgeous, the mechanics are robust and engaging, and the rules will appeal to players with a broad range of “crunch” preferences, though it never gets as crunchy as something like Pathfinder (either edition).
All that said, the One Ring (2e by Free League at least) is totally worth the purchase. While the game system itself may not be as fun to play as MERP/Rolemaster, it is 100% better suited to telling stories that fit into Tolkien's world.
Oct 18, 2021 · As it says, what are your thoughts on the new edition of The One Ring? I'm waiting for it to hit retail in due course. To help me decide whether to buy or not, is it, for example, better in every way, does it resolve old problems but adds in new ones, or am I better of sticking with my tried and trusted 1e?
One of the biggest changes is how Hope and TN work in 2e. I found that 1e was lacking in challenging the players once they've got a bit of XP and advanced their skills some. 2e seems to have chosen to make it even less challenging which I'm not sure is a good thing for something more than a random one-shot with starting characters.
