It earned approximately $11 million at the box office, but was met by largely unfavorable reviews from critics, many of whom deemed it exploitative and derivative of such films as Friday the 13th (1980).
As for the filming locations, Sleepaway Camp was filmed during the autumn season of 1982 on the land surrounding Summit Lake in Argyle, New York. The former Camp Algonquin was the setting used for the fictional Camp Arawak. Robert Hiltzik attended the camp as a boy and returned years later to direct his first film.
