After a two-year run, the series Burke's Law was drastically revamped for the 1965-1966 season from a murder mystery format to an international espionage drama, in keeping with the recent surge in popularity of the spy genre.

Towards the end of the series in 1965, Burke quit the police force and entered the world of espionage. With Burke now a globe-trotting undercover secret agent under the instructions of his contact at the Agency, simply called ‘The Man’, the series was renamed Amos Burke – Secret Agent.
Now titled Amos Burke, Secret Agent, the show depicted Burke as working for a government department headed by a shadowy figure called The Man. Tilson, Hart, Ames, and Henry were all left behind, as was the uniform “Who Killed...?” episode titles.
Amos Burke was a Los Angeles chief of detectives who was also a millionaire with a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce, a mansion, and a high-wheeling lifestyle. The hallmarks of this series were glamorous, sophisticated settings, unusual twists on formula homicide plotlines, and big-name guest stars.
