When you think of Arabic souks, you think of labyrinthine dark passageways full of spices and perfume. Beirut Souks are a modern take on this. Although controversial, the area is beautifully done. It would have been impossible to recreate the old Beirut before the wars.

Sep 25, 2022 · Modern malls and high-end residences rise among Beirut’s war remnants. When you head downtown to Beirut Souks, don’t expect the jumble and chaos of Marrakech.
As a shopping district and a people’s place, Beirut Souks offers a trendy mix of signature stores, boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, children activities, and entertainment. At the northeast end of the souks stands Beirut Souks CinemaCity, one of the largest standalone multiplex in the region.
- Baalbeck. Dating back to the Ottoman period, Baalbeck’s authentic souk — made up of butcher shops, bakeries and spice shops — is not to be missed. Try the raw meat at Abou Mhadi (+961 70 883468) and Lebanese desserts like nammoura with ashta at Al Jawhari Sweets (+961 8 370240).
- Batroun. The old souk of Batroun is a pleasant cobblestone market with curved sandstone arches. It is made up of several lanes where old crafts are still practiced by tailors, cobblers and blacksmiths.
- Byblos. Built during the Ottoman era, the old souk of Byblos is one of Lebanon’s most famous tourist attractions. It is made up of small shops selling souvenirs, local crafts and antiques.
- Douma. Douma is a traditional Lebanese village with stone houses featuring red-tiled roofs, noise-free streets and a charming souk. Its souk — referred to as “Al Bandar” — played a significant role in strengthening the town’s economy by carrying goods from Damascus and the Bekaa, as well as cedarwood to build ships.

Although it is not a traditional souk, it has a good range of shops, restaurants, and cinemas. There is ample parking, and the souk is convenient for downtown and Zaituny Bay. I recommend Antoine: an excellent bookshop. The Saturday market is always worth a visit. To eat, I go for Casper and Gambini. Read more.
