1013541. Taunton Castle is a castle built to defend the town of Taunton, Somerset, England. It has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester.
Taunton Castle was the administrative centre for the vast Somerset estates of the bishops of Winchester. The present stone-built castle was originally founded by Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and grandson of William the Conqueror. It was used as a prison and assize court for many centuries.

CASTLE HOUSE is to the east of the gatehouse and lies along the inner face of the south curtain wall. It is a two-storey, four-and a half-bay range that was built as lodgings in the late C15, upgraded and converted to the single dwelling in the mid-C16, and remodelled around 1700.
