St Paul's is an unusual cathedral in that it was designed by a single individual and completed in a short time. The architect was Sir Christopher Wren and the building replaced the ancient cathedral which burnt down in the Great Fire of 1666.
It develops his design from a building in the form of a Greek cross, in which the four arms of the structure are the same dimensions, towards his Great Model design with an extended nave.
