- In 1903, Braque enrolled in the Academie Humbert in Paris. He painted there for two years and met avant-garde painters Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia. The earliest Braque paintings are in the classic impressionist style. That changed in 1905 when he began to associate with Henri Matisse.

Braque was brought up in Le Havre where he trained as a painter and decorator. He moved to Paris in 1900, later becoming associated with the Fauves. Influenced by Cézanne, from 1907 he abandoned loose brushwork for a more structured, geometric style.
Braque and Picasso began to experiment with papier collé and collage in 1912. The fruitful collaboration between the two artists continued until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, when Braque left Paris to enlist in the French Army. Severely wounded in the war, Braque resumed painting in 1917.
