The school opened on 28 September 1896 when 44 boys and 41 girls enrolled. The school magazine Avonian was first published in 1902. The new block consisting of six classrooms, an art room, a craft room, a biology lab, gymnasium and a new hall were officially opened by Alderman John Thomas in 1938.

He attended Blaenbaglan Primary school until 1984, when he moved onto Glan Afan Comprehensive School. As a child in Liverpool, he was bitten by the football bug, and regularly played on a Saturday for Baglan Boys Club.
