Jan 22, 2024 · The story of Ridge begins with Osea Perrone, an Italian doctor who purchased 180 acres of property near the Monte Bello Ridge in 1885. Perrone built a winery into the mountainside, terraced the slopes, and planted vineyards, and by 1892, he released his first wine under the Monte Bello Winery name.
In 1886, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the first Monte Bello vineyards were planted, and winery construction begun. A first vintage from the young vines followed in 1892. During Prohibition (1920-1933), the vineyard was not fully maintained; some vines survived into the late 30’s, but by the 1940s they were effectively abandoned.

Here is a useful timeline. In 1962, four Stanford University's Research Institute scientists bonded the winery and produced the first bottle of Monte Bello.
In 1971, Ridge was the first producer to make a vineyard designated wine from the famous Eisele vineyard. The extremely rare wine was only produced in that one vintage. Paul Draper was quoted as saying the reason they did not produce additional vintages is that the wine was too high in alcohol at its then 12.5% level.
